Über Vermittlung durch Chris Thomas hat uns Katy Firth von der Britischen Quekett-Microscopical Society die Ted Kellock Sammlung petrologischer Schliffpräparate des Stromness-Museums auf der Orkney Insel ganz im Norden Großbritanniens vorgestellt.

Auf der Homepage des Museum wird die Sammlung beschrieben: „We hold the unique collection of about 4,000 rockslides and associated hand specimens of Ted Kellock, an amateur geologist and naturalist who collected mainly igneous and metamorphic rocks from Orkney, Shetland, Scotland and worldwide. He cut, prepared, ground and mounted his specimens as microscope thin sections on equipment designed and built by himself. A virtual volunteer is currenly working with us to catalogue the collection.“

Mit viel Engagement hat Katy diese schon fast vergessene Sammlung aufgearbeitet und in Kooperation mit Schulen und Museumsfreunden der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert: Ein vorbildliches Projekt, über das sie schon anlässlich des World Microscopy Day referiert hat.
